RAW converters

I'm not really interested in paying for a subscription.  Just looking for alternatives to Adobe RAW converter.  I know DxO and Capture 1 have one, however I have no experience with them.  Are you aware of any RAW converter plugins that work with Photoshop CS6?

ACR is built into CS 6. What else do you need?

Once, a man was in a music store; chewing on the idea
of buying his long time dream piano. He remembered a
friend saying that it takes 10 years to learn to play the
piano, so he decided not to buy the piano.

He visited the same music store contemplating his long
time dream piano… ten years later.

I don't understand the question. Do you want a processing program, or a converter?

If you want a converter, the only possible choice is the Adobe DNG converter, which will create a format that is (despite not being a "standard") pretty widely handled by software products.

If you want a processor, you can look at
  • Lightroom
  • Photoshop using ACR
  • Affinity
  • Luminar
  • On1 RAW
  • Capture 1
  • DxO
  • Probably something from Corel
  • Others.
Most of them have trial periods. I suggest you:
  1. Research their pricing models, figure out your budget, and select or eliminate accordingly.
  2. Pick one, purpose to use it during the trial period, install and get some experience. You'll likely know quickly whether you like it or not, but give yourself time to work on some images.
  3. Move to another program, and repeat.
You'll be in a much better position to make a selection.

It is clear to me that what is wanted is a RAW developer
and converter…  don't have to go the .dng way.

Well, the question was about RAW convertors and CS6. The DNG would most certainly come into play for a newer camera that isn't supported by CS6. It would have to be converted to DNG to be processed. The question is either vague or the OP is misinformed. ACR comes with CS6. No need for any other convertor unless as I said the camera is too new to be supported. If so, then convert to DNG first and ACR will handle it from there.
