Exporting PNG vs JPEG from Photoshop

4 years 8 months ago #654630 by Deb Reardon
When exporting form Photoshop will you export the image as a PNG or JPEG?  PNG has more data in it right?

Also are you doing anything with the color space settings?

Thank you

IMO, png file is just a jpg file with transparency support.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I always export to jpg. I set color space to sRGB so it can be viewed correctly on various devices.

I never export in PNG, always JPG.  Honestly, I didn't ,now what PNG was for.  So, I never worried about it.

PNG files are not "just JPGs with transparency".

JPG is a lossy compression algorithm that will throw away data. Repeated application of JPG compression can result in severe artifacts appearing in the image. JPG does not support a transperency (alpha) channel.

PNG, developed separately and a bit later, uses lossless compression, and discards none of the original data. Therefore, files will usually be larger. The format was developed as a method for transferring files on the web, and for use by websites. PNGs support transparency. They only allow the RGB color space, too.

As for color space (a separate question) pretty much every display device out there is only going to support sRGB. The file format is irrelevant.

Given the server re-compression that occurs with most web servers, using a high-quality original file when sharing images will help obviate degradation. For example, if you use good size, 90% JPGs or PNGs as a starting point for Facebook images, you will generally end up with an image that looks decent. You start with a 60% JPG (having thrown out a good amount of information) then, after the server gets through re-compressing it, you'll probably have garbage.

Working in AdobeRGB or ProPhotoRGB allows the ability to move to CMYK, if need be. But that has nothing to do with the web and phones and what-not.

The net: sharing online? sRGB always. JPGs at 80% will have good quality. Building a website? PNGs might be called for.
