How to increase and decrease audio levels in final cut pro x?

4 years 8 months ago #655854 by Farestad
I've started doing video's for my wedding and corporate clients and have been working on these video's more dynamic and interesting.  Like I have background music going, and then someone will start saying something in the video, and I want to reduce the audio while they are talking, and when they are doing, increase the audio of the music back up.  How can this be done please?

Thank you!

You are looking for a tool that does what's called "ducking". Ducking is about lowering the volume of one or more tracks based on activity on an important track.

There's probably a plugin somewhere that can to it for you. Otherwise, do it by hand using envelopes on your tracks. In this case you'd run all of your other tracks to a submix, and use an envelope on the submix to lower the volume where needed.

Actually, you'll likely need to use a submix anyways.

Actually just use keyframes.   When  you have the audio track selected, top right of FCPX you'll see the little speaker icon.  Click on that and directly below that will be a volume slider with a key frame button to the right.   Add key frame where you want to adjust volume, move volume slider.  Then add another keyframe to where you want to recover the volume and move volume slider back. Super easy.
