Copyright symbol

I was trying to find the Copyright symbol, then as I'm ready to grab one from a Google search, it dawned on me that this copyright image might be copyrighted.

Or when it comes to symbols or common things like this, are they free to use seeing that they all are nearly exactly the same?

One can own a symbol and its specific design, but not
a character — letter or digit — but its font, typeface.

Look on the US Copyright Office website and see what it says about using the symbol.

Are you talking about ©? Or what?

It's part of most fonts on Windows and MacOS. It's not copyrighted, it's the international symbol to denote copyright. And if you want to use it on Windows, hold down Alt and type "0169" then release the Alt key.

Charmap is your friend, by the way.

Unless I completely misunderstood your question.

On MacOS, it's "Option G".

In addition to the already mentioned shortcuts for ©, in the U.S. you can use the abbreviation "Copr." rather than the ©.

"A copyright notice consists of three elements:

• The copyright symbol © or (p) for phonorecords, the word “Copyright,” or the abbreviation“Copr.”;

• The year of first publication of the work (or of creation if the work is unpublished); and
• The name of the copyright owner, an abbreviation by which the name can be recognized, or agenerally known alternative designation."
