They are changing name to just Exposure Software.   After so long!

Like others, they started to promote imagery which is more
spectacular than photography but times have proven that
not all want to go that way… so they have to adapt too.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Honestly, while I know them by Alien Skin, the new name suits them and in the long haul will be better for them.

I think the OP reads too much click bait online.

The title of this thread could be more accurately stated, "Alien Skin changes its name in rebranding exercise."

Or some such.

I think the name they chose is kinda lame, however.

Am I missing something here?  https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/clickbait

You might want to take a read.

OP, I do agree with Gary on one thing, "you read too much into it", companies all the time pivot names, products and far much more.  Personally I like Alien Skin better myself.  I won't say their new name is lame, just for me, I think Alien Skin pops.  It's unique, like "Monster", better yet read this;  https://novanym.com/blogs/blog/43924801-10-great-business-names-that-started-out-meaningless   more interesting reading:  https://www.businessinsider.com/where-16-of-the-strangest-company-names-came-from-2012-11#yandex-has-a-double-meaning-yet-another-indexer-and-the-russian-word--ya-sounds-like-i-in-english-ya-ndex-3

Alien Skin if you are new doesn't scream what the company does at first glance, that is where creative marketing needs to pull those eye balls in for a closer look.   I get their strategy with Exposure, as it's a common word that happens to be the back bone to photography.

I actually like new logo better than the old one.

From a branding standpoint, the new name is much more targeted and for new comers will attract more peeps.  While I like the old name better, I guess the new doesn't rub me the wrong way.  So take that however, just my 2 cents.
