Upload speed from card vs SSD external hard drive

4 years 7 months ago #658501 by Cathy Kadolph
I'm trying to upload files directly from my cameras SD card to drop box.  This is taking forever. Would it be faster to save the files on my computers external hard drive first, then upload to dropbox?

That is, Cathy, because your DB target folder is in the cloud
and that comes with a service provider upload limitation.

I believe that's a bingo....I know mine has limitations.

Why so serious?

For example, I can download at 2,8M but can upload
at only 600k.

Not enough information, despite the likely conclusions already stated.

What is your network upload speed? That's a gating factor.

Your SD card is on a USB-connected reader? USB 2? USB 3? How fast can you read data from the card? That's a gating factor.

There are two bottle necks, therefore. You need to figure out which is the gating factor for your situation: if it's the card read speed, the time needed to copy the files to a hard drive first may make the total time longer, and therefore not worth it. If it's your upload speed, find out if you can buy more bandwidth, and what that would cost you.

I'm not sure why this matters. Anything large I need to get to someone else, I move the files from SD card to hard drive, then send everything all at once to the network, at night, while I'm in bed. I don't need to babysit that operation.
