Lightroom vs Photoshop. Is Photoshop even needed?

4 years 6 months ago #662171 by Liem Stailey
I guess this question is aimed at more of the seasoned photographers here.  I'm teaching myself Lightroom and Photoshop and it kind of strikes me that most of all my post processing can be done in Lightroom.  Is Photoshop even needed for the casual photographer?

Well let me ad, if it is, what sort of stuff would you use Photoshop for, that Lightroom can't do?

LR can do the majority of work for most folks. But PS does quite a bit of heavy lifting, if you need it.

I have a buddy that has come to realize that, in order to grow, he needs more function when it comes to editing. But it took a few years to get to that point.

I suggest looking at some of the free tutorials by Blake Rudis for examples of what can be done in PS.

You can do a lot more in Photoshop when you learn and begin using layers. That is the big advantage.

Photoshop is great for more advanced processing.  Who knows, perhaps they will merge more of these functions into Lightroom in the future.

I use LR  for about 85% of my post processing workflow.  There are just other things that need to be done and that remaining 15% is handled in Photoshop.  So yes, needed.
