Luminar 4 AI Sky Replacement Ethics in using?

4 years 5 months ago #663974 by Marin Chi
I was just on Skylums Luminar 4 page and reading on their AI Sky Replacement software which looks incredible.  BUT, will using this be considered cheating in contests or other situations where authenticity might be considered?

As I see it, days of hoping for incredible skies are over.  With the use of their software you can go out, not plan for anything.  Grab a photo with the foreground interest you want, and blah sky and just swap out the sky in post?  Do you think this will be questioned as unethical practice?

First off, the quality and direction of light matters. So using "any ol' sky" isn't quite it.

As for compositing, it depends upon the situation. If a contest allows digital images, then all is fair. No ethical problem at all until someone starts lying about capturing an image.

Some contests allow no manipulation of that sort, and make it very clear up front. Here's one where a simple edit went horribly wrong:

So: read the Ts & Cs of any competition you wish to enter. And don't lie about your images.

I hear you.  But don't you think there will be people that will  think they are smarter than the system and cheat by entering different skies into their shots?

What system? And why is it cheating?

My response above fully addressed this parameters.

As for "smarter" you mean creating a composite when strictly prohibited, and lying about it? Yeah, people get caught, sooner or later. And any contest that cares about that sort of thing usually vets images by requiring the original file for comparison.

That said, there's more to award-winning shots than the sky.

G'day Marin

The Photographic Society of America + the British equivalent plus the Australian equivalent ALL have definitions covering this type of photograph and digital editing ... and as Gary says - it's clearly covered in their Terms & Conditions

If you are creating an image for submission to a magazine, then you are / seem to be - free to do as you like to show off your editing skills. It's "horses for courses" stuff

Hope this helps

So will that program shift the colors in the rest of the photo to match the new tones in the sky?

Picture this if you will: you’re out in nature with your hopes, dreams, and a camera to capture it all. You see the beauty of creation stretching out before you, so you carefully and patiently set up your gear to get the perfect shot. Finally, the sun moves to just the right spot, and you hold your breath while you press the shutter button. Then you realize the clouds are all wrong. You can wait for hours for the ideal opportunity to present itself, or you can do sky replacement using Photoshop to drop in another one. It’s not as difficult as it might seem and can lead to some exciting results.
