Tonemapping vs HDR

4 years 3 weeks ago #678188 by KENT MELTON
I was just reading another photographers rant about these, and he spoke about them being different.  Now I really thought these were the same processes, just different names.

I didn't call the guy out, or question him.  LOL mainly incase I was wrong.

So is tonemapping the same or different from HDR?

They are different. You generally tonemap an HDR image but you don't have to. The tonemapping is where you get the surreal/illustrated look from if you push the tonemapping far enough. A straight up HDR image won't yield that look on its own. I know some will probably disagree with me but I have a very specific definition of HDR.
