"!" showing on images in Lightroom after setting up back up drives

3 years 10 months ago #686173 by Ted Baker
I set up a backup SSD drive that is external and plugs in via USB-C into my computer.  I moved all my photo files from my laptop to this new drive.  Now the drive is still plugged into my computer however all my images in Lightroom have a "!" next to them.  Shouldn't that not be there seeing that the drive is plugged into the computer?

You possibly work in catalogue, Ted, and Lr does not re-
cognise the new location. If you plan to leave all the pho-
tos on the external SSD, maybe refresh the catalogue?

You moved the files without using Lightroom. How do you expect it to know where they are? You will have to direct Lightroom to where the images are located and they will be linked up again.

Unless you used Lightroom to move the files, you did it wrong.

Once a file is "owned" by Lightroom, you never do anything with it outside of Lightroom. That's basic truism.

Now that you've moved the files, you need to click on the exclamation mark and show LR where to find the asset.

That is if you want to go on working with catalogues.
Working in "sessions" would be different.

Yep, can be challenging when you have multiple storage drives that you use with Lightroom.

You should move all your images on a 10-12 TB drive and keep them in the same spot.
