Why would you convert your images to DNG these days?

I was just reading another photographers post on a Facebook update where he's talking about converting his image library to DNG files.

Am I missing something, why would you convert your images to DNG files?

I never had the idea of that conversion, Mike, and will not ever.

A student of mine had to — since the RAW format of the camera
was not recognised by his favourite RAW converter — but it is now.

You could, however, experiment it by yourself. Create a folder with
a few copies of your best RAW files and convert these copies only.
Then compare.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Adobe has promoted this new "standard" for a while now. Early on, the idea was, "what if your software stops supporting your RAW file format?"

A ) That hasn't happened, ever.
B ) If it does, you:
  1. Keep a copy of the old version that does what you need, and/or
  2. you convert at that time, as needed.
DNGs save no space, AFAIK. They add an extra step to your workflow.

The only compelling reason to use them (as stated above) is when you get a new camera, which produces a new version of a RAW file that isn't supported by your software, and you can't wait for an update. So, convert and use the DNG. Keep the RAW. Upgrade your software when possible.

There is one camera model (brand?) that is writing DNG files natively. I don't recall who. But apparently no other manufacturer feels the need to change over.
