Will editing or altering an image reduce the overall quality of the image?

1 year 10 months ago #691671 by Cara Wilkins
When you do things in Photoshop or Lightroom or what ever post processing software you are using to your images.  Will these edits effect or reduce the overall quality of the image?  Example you resize the photo, straighten the horizon by rotating the shot, bumping up the saturation, etc.  Things like this.

Thank you.

The only one mentioned that will definitely affect image quality is resizing. The rest depends on how drastically you adjust an image. A lighter touch is generally better. You have asked a rather vague question. The only real answer is it depends.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

As Randy pointed out, it's a vague question. And you need to specify whether you're asking aboug destructive or non-destructive editing. They're different. And Lightroom and PS are therefore different.

Then: define "Quality"?

Resizing: you reduce the size, you're going to throw away data after using it to produce the smaller version. You increase the size, you're making stuff up (Topaz Labs GigaPixel AI, or Capture One, or whatever, notwithstanding). Does that reduce the overall quality? You tell me. Smaller images generally look 'better'.

Image rotation: depends upon the algorithm.
Saturation is about the color table. It affects the appearance, yes. But is that the same as "quality"?

Finally, any editing procedure can be misused, and result in something less appealing than when you started.
