Most Common Aspect Ratio when it comes to prints?

2 years 2 months ago #706850 by Chase Audate
I was just reading someone else's post here who is looking for a camera that has a 21:9 aspect ratio.   This has me thinking, what are the most common aspect ratios when it comes to printing?

Will change from medium format to full frame cameras to APS-C?

When it comes to aspect ratios, original sensor size is irrelevant
— though maximum printing size will be directly dependent.

On the horizontal, anything goes. However, the vertical is taking
somehow different directions related to the end use. For instance,
a vertical print of 4x5 will look stronger than a 2x3. When consider-
ing a layout, anything can go.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

G'day Chase

Your local print shop will offer prints of varying formats -
4" x 6" then 8" x 12" then 12" x 18" then 16" x 24" and so it goes - all from 35mm film or sensor in 2:3 format =or=
from medium format (used to be called 6 x 4,5 from the roll film in use) becomes 4:3 shape and various print sizes stem from that

Print shops manage to do these via swapping between rolls of print-paper and try to avoid trimming / wastage as much as possible
