Bumping up saturation and blacks before sending to printer?

1 year 2 months ago #748700 by J Hemingway
This salty old photographer today was giving me some print tips.  Some seem pretty legit and interesting.  He stated that I should turn up my saturation on my prints and also tighten up my blacks before I send to the printer.  Very interesting thought.  Now that I'm home, I'm thinking more about this and want to understand more of the reasoning behind his thoughts.

I'm guessing this might be a trial and error thing, but do you have any input on this doing either of these?

It's common practice to make changes when they're needed.

I tend to boost the vibrance / saturation (of greens) if anything and also a slight amount of Unsharp Masking .
I  find  that my prints tend to look a bit flat in the greens ,  while other colours are OK .  I may still need to do more work on the calibration and profiling of my monitor ,  and  you might consider (if you don't already) this aspect.  Do you understand about calibration and profiling ?
Unsharp masking  gives a nice "crisp" effect to the fine detail .
For the vibrance / saturation adjustment ,  I don't do it in the printing dialog ,  but in Photoshop's vibrance / saturation tools (Image > Adjustments > Vibrance or Hue/Saturation) or when first processing the raw image , in the "HSL Adjustments" tab .

I've done my own darkroom work and do my own digital prints. Never heard of doing this.

Depends on the printer.  I'll do a test print with someone first, if I feel the files need it moving forward, then I'll add as needed.

Eh, not unless the photo REALLY needs it.
