I've been using a  Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 for a bit now and love this printer.  It was a big upgrade for me and my prints really look awesome from it.  Paper wise, I've stuck with Canon on this one and using their Pro Platinum glossy, for my needs it looks awesome.

Have always preferred the Epson printers for their relative availability compared to HP, Canon  and others .  More shops  (at least in my country)  seem to stock the Epsons and consumables than the others ,  and  there seems (from my observations) also to be a greater level of 3rd-party support from other manufacturers .  Currently use Epson Stylus Pro 3880 for 10 years and still working great .

As far as papers , my go-tos are Canson Infinity Satin and High-Gloss , some of the Ilford Galerie, Epson Hot-press bright,  for different results for different purposes .  A lot of fine-art printers seem to gravitate towards the Hahnemuhle ,  but  none of their products that I have tried appealed to me .

Some colour managment tips :
  • calibrate your  monitor regularly (if you don't already) ;
  • download and install the respective ICC profiles for your chosen papers (if you haven't already) from their respective manufacturers ;
  • when wanting to make any changes to the colour / brightness factors , do so in your photo-editing program,  not in the printing routine ;
  • periodically test your printer and do the occasional 'cleaning routine' if your printer offers it , to ensure you're getting best results .  E.g., in my Epson printer program I have the option to do "Clean Printheads" and "Alignment test" routines .

That's a nice printer, how has the ink consumption been for you?

I have a Canon Pixma and print on the highest resolution settings. It does use more ink than lower res settings but coverage is better. Mine takes more ink tanks than many printers, two black and five color. The ink is what can get costly.

I've bought sample packs to try different papers by any given manufacturer. I tend to like glossy more than matte finish but it depends on the image.
