I paid for both Lightroom and Photoshop CS. At the time I didn't realize that Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw offer the same processing options. I just use ACR, so I probably won't upgrade my Lightroom.

Photoshop seems expensive, but if you compare it to what equipping a darkroom back in the day would cost it's really not too bad, and much more convenient. Processing software may not be as exciting as new cameras and lenses, but to me it's one of the most important and most used photo tools I have. I think it's a bargain. Also once you buy it once you can upgrade it much cheaper. I don't upgrade every time they have a new release. They'll let you go a couple of releases, and still upgrade later.

If Photoshop is too expensive then go with Lightroom. That's a lot cheaper, and covers 95% (maybe more) of the photo processing I need. I think it would be enough for most folks. GIMP is free. I've never used it myself, but I've been hearing good things about it for years.

There were times in my life were I may have been willing to pirate software, music, movies, books, etc..., but after I started making a living on my own creative work, and occasionally having it ripped off without my permission, I've become a lot more understanding as to why people want to get paid for their effort, product, creative content, etc... :)

Buy a legitimate copy. Or try GIMP. www.gimp.org/
