What is difference between tone mapping and HDR photos?

I'm I missing something here? Two separate terms, yet they both pretty much do the same? Maybe I have this wrong, if so please correct me or help me understand please. Both finish results look pretty much the same?

Thanks :)

Yes, they're synonymous terms. Tone mapping is the process used to to create a photo with High dynamic range. Think of the term "tonemapping' as mapping the photograph's tone the way you want, along the extended dynamic range those extra shots give you.

Now, this what confuses people:

Tone mapping can be used for a single shot, or for multiple shots combined.

But only multiple shots gives a true HDR (High Dynamic Range) photograph.

Tonemapping a single shot does not take advantage of extended dynamic range, and only simulates the HDR effect.
