Why do some of my photos have a black edge on the left side.

A few of my film photos taken with an old minolta SLR had a black edge. Most of the photos were fine. I have attached an example.

I have also attached an example of a photo taken with the same camera and the same film to show that there is no light leak into the camera.

Does anyone have an idea why some of the photos have this black edge?
Is it to do with the light, I live in a bright country in Africa. I used film with a sensitivity of 400 ASA

Since it seems to fade from the edge inward I don't think it has to do with the film.  Were you using a relatively short lens, like a 50mm?  It could be your finger getting in the view of the lens.

Hi Simon,
What you're probably seeing is the edge of the shutter.
The image looks as if you may have used a flash for a bit of fill-in. If so, you may have the shutter speed too fast (faster than 1/250th).
Check your shutter speed, try it again with a slower speed (say, 1/100) and also if you used front (first) or rear curtain in your settings.
Hope this helps!
Neil.
