Question:35mm vs medium format with the same lenses

4 years 8 months ago #652619 by Darin-Tan
Hey I'm still new to film photography or just photography and I was wondering if lenses work differently on different format ?

Situation: I have used a 50mm lens my entire time with (film) photography on a 35mm and I wanted to try and get into medium format however I'm lost. 50mm lens is a versatile lens on a 35mm but I'm wondering if it will be more of a wider angle lens to a medium format such as a 28mm lens is to a 35mm body. I know this may be obvious but i'm lost because from what I observed online, medium format cameras tended to be pair with a lens that has a further focal length.

Concluding statement: If this is so then could you give a scale that would be fantastic e.g
                          35mm: wide angle =28mm-35mm
                                          standard =50mm-70mm
                                                     etc= telephoto/macro/super zoom ???

         Medium Format : wide angle =
                                         Standard =

                          35mm: telephoto = 200 mm +
                                            macro = 55 to 200 mm
                                    super zoom = x ~ 300mm +

 Medium Format (6x7) : wide angle = ~ 50 mm
                                          Standard = 110 mm

50mm is a wide angle focal length on medium format.  6X6 cameras usually had 80mm for a normal lens and 6X7 was usually 90mm.  However, lenses made for 35mm cameras won't work on medium format.  I assume you know that.  I had a 50 wide angle for my RZ67 and it was a stunning lens.
