Help with calculations for developing negatives

4 years 7 months ago #658866 by LunaValRestrepo
Hi guys!

It's my second time posting in this forum and the first one was super helpful.

I started developing my B&W negative in my bathroom but the results where not well revealed. After thinking about it, I concluded that one of my calculation was wrong.

I wanted to check with you for the second time if my calculations are correct.

My film is a FOMAPAN 400 ISO 400, my developer is a RODINAL, I have the ILFOSTOP and the KODAFIX solution. My tank is a Patterson tank universal 4 with two reels but I am only using one reel for one film.

I decided to fill the tank entirely even though I am only developing one film. So 580 ml if I am correct.

RODINAL : 1+25 / 11min / 20 degrees.
580 / 26 = 22.3 ml
580 - 22.3 = 557.7 ml
So 22.3 ml of Rodinal and 557.7 ml of water
(I have seen the Dev Short and for ISO 400, three differetion dillutions were proposed, I chose the first one, please let me know if that is wrong).

ILFOSTOP: 1+19
1+19 = 20
580 / 20 = 29
580 - 29= 551
So 29 ml of ILFOSTOP and 551 ml of Water.

KODAFIX = 1+3
1+3=4
580/4 = 145
580-145=435
So 145 ml of Kodafix and 435 ml of Water

I hope this is not too much trouble for you, it would be a great help if someone is willing to check this calculations or let me know if the ml in my tank is wrong or anything else.

Thank you so much for your time and wonderful help!!!

G'day mate

Your maths is fine - but don't fuss too much with being over-accurate with each of the stop or fixer ... each of them is reused several times, esp if you double or treble the strength. The developer on the other hand will need to be "fairly accurate" - not necessarily into scientific accuracy, but not so inaccurate as to make it all go belly-up

For me [years ago] I made up 2litre bottles of stop & fixer and reused them for up to a dozen rolls of film over about a 4-week period

For temperature control - esp in the cold of winter, I had the bottles in a warm-water bath in the sink - at about 70F / 21C before actual use in the tank. ps- my tanks were both the 2-roll & 4-roll sizes ~ I was also doing heaps of E6 colour slide stuff as well

Hope this helps
