C41 Developing Issue

3 years 7 months ago #696116 by justjoshng

I recently developed multiple rolls of 35mm film and noticed there was some artifact from what looks like the perforated edges of the film. I used Cinestill C41 chemistry to develop the rolls in the Paterson 3-Reel Tank. I had the chemicals in a circulating waterbath set to 40 degrees Celsius. Does anyone have an idea what happened here and how to prevent it in the future? Thanks!

G'day Josh

Seems a bit odd to me - but the item in the hands is a tad small to define exactly (looks a bit like a butterfly wing!!)

Regardless of C-41 vs mono - the artifact I met mostly in the early days was the grey from sprocket holes 'growing' into the frame via excessive agitation

Hope this helps

I was looking at this shot and wondered if you possibly had a mishap while threading the film on the spool.  It likes like maybe part of the film was touching the adjacent film and it maybe blocked some of the developer from completing it's job on that frame, thus causing that flaw.  You didn't say if it was on every shot, or just this one.  If it is on every shot, then misthreading the spool is not the problem, because you would never be able to feed the complete roll on the spool. I don't know what else it could possibly be.  I never ever saw this happen back in my film developing days.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
