Pitching major magazines and newspapers

For those who are committed to the craft...

Can you share with me some pitching tips?

Is it the copy? Or the samples?

What makes a photojournalism pitch appealing?

Can't say I've ever 'pitched' an article...

I used to do small pieces on local businesses for the local rag, but the closest would be freelancing for several automotive mags...

In this, I used to find a feature vehicle I thought would 'fit' with the magazine (obviously needed a decent back story or 'hook') and would shoot it, interview the owner and draft an article and submit it.

Never had one turned down.

I guess, the best I can recommend is to know the publication well and be sure what you're submitting is in line with their content...

Major magazines these days often will not accept unsolicited photos or articles. Many will have a submission process that you'd have to look up and read to find out what to do.

There may be options with local/regional magazines that have smaller readerships than the major magazines. Stic probably has found success in part because he covers a specific niche that he knows well.

Your writing skills need to be brought up to a professional level.

What makes a photojournalism piece successful above all is a compelling story, in your words as well as your images. Cull thoughtfully and be sure that you're putting forward something that can hook the viewers in. Also have to agree with icepics, if you can find a publications submission guidelines, follow them.

Yep...

Was very handy having some close friends involved in the start up of the national Drift scene here, and becoming the 'official' D1NZ photographer helped too...

Long days, longer nights, lots of work and you sometimes get rewarded...sometimes...;)

:agree:   AKA do some research first on who you are sending your shots too.
