Faces of Open Source - "an on-going photographic documentation"

Believe it or not; there are people out there who make computer software and don't charge any money for it. As a photographer you have probably heard about GIMP or RawTherapee...
Here are some portraits of a few of these men and women.....

I'm not sure why people are making their software available for free, but I suppose that's up to them.

But the guy doing the 'Faces' site seems to want people to give him money. Yes it costs money for studio equipment, etc. so why doesn't he charge the subjects/clients for his portraits of them instead of asking other people to be 'sponsors'?

Reading his statement it seems like it's a personal project which I'd think could be done on a blog, but he's also apparently planning to do a book. Seems like ultimately he wants to make money with this.
