Obviously, this circus IS a real enterprise…
the one I shot was a family operation.

Well done work, perfect WB in #5. :P

Light is free… capturing it is not!

G'day Gary

A wonderful set of images & memories for you

The circus is one of those events that have been with us for centuries but are fading in this modern world, so for you to both see it and record some of the pizzaz is a beaut experience

Your images grab me - esp the 'king' in the second set - wonderful !!

Thank you Phil. Sadly, I think most 'live' entertainment is fading away in favor of computer and phone screens.

I find them, on the whole, entirely too contrasty. Losing the background to black just takes away context for me. And the shadows around the subjects just lose any sense of detail.

Most of them seem rather soft, as well, to me; I don't know of that's from mitigation of high ISO, or what. Maybe due to pushing saturation a bit too far?

Having discussed stage lighting with lighting people, there's a certain sense of "record the scene as lit", so over time I've given up worrying about skin color. While the WB of the horse and rider looks good here, it matters not for these kinds of shots. Therefore, comments about WB are irrelevant.

Love the shot of the little boy re: composition and light.

FWIW there was a show about the circus on (PBS) American Experience recently: "The Circus". Chronicled the origin of B&B and the Ringling Bros. Very, very interesting. Ignored Europe and modern shows, but what it covered, it covered quite well. We enjoyed it immensely.
