Looking for bridge camera recommendations.

5 years 3 months ago #624201 by amcdonald
Hello! I am upgrading from a Nikon L820 which I loved. I am stuck between 3 and I was hoping someone here had some advice. Note: I am only concerned with picture quality, not video.

-Nikon B700-
Pros-Zoom (not necessary but a cool feature), I like Nikon, higher MP, SnapBridge app.
Cons- small sensor and it’s sold out most everywhere.
-Canon SX70- so new there’s not a ton of reviews. I’ve never owned a Canon but I’m sure it would be great.
-Sony RX10-
Pros- overall seems like a great camera, higher MP, 1 inch sensor, great manual options, weather sealed
Cons-$200ish more expensive than other 2, doesn’t zoom as far, seems big
-Question about Sony & Canon- how is their app for sending pictures to your phone?

Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, does anyone know where I can go to get my hands on these to just look at and play with? My local Best Buy didn’t have any of these.

My interests are family and landscape photography. Also would like to be able to print large images in good quality (my 16 MP L820 has done great up to 20x30)

Thank you!! :)

Make that ILC and I would agree. You don't have to have a DSLR to be serious.

G'day mate

You are asking about 'bridge' cameras ... so forget about the other fellas talking SLRs!!!
I am a confirmed superzoom / bridge camera user (although I also have a mirrorless SLR + a bevy of lenses) - and so I can easily see where you're coming from :)

There are 2 critical things with any digital camera .... a) the lens & image quality and b) the sensor & image processing. After this comes ergonomics, camera controls and other options

Over the years I have used both Fuji & Panasonic superzooms, and via student workshops have played with Oly + Canon + Nikon + others ... and I have settled on the Panny cameras as the best for my usage. I suggest you look into them, but I recognise that they might not suit you

The Panny FZ-300 is probably the best value for money unit they sell - its supersharp Leica designed lens covers the 24 to 600mm film-camera range, AND maintains the aperture whilst zooming. It is the only constant-aperture zoom lens on the bridge-camera market

With the FZ-300, Panny have kept to a 12mpx sensor to maximise pixel size within a small sensor, thus reducing noise when compared with other makers trying to put 16 or 20mpx into the same sized sensor

If you can afford it &/or you want to settle on the 1" sensor, then the Panny FZ2000 is well worth looking into. It is the big-brother to the FZ-300 ... and 'big' is the term here as it's nearly 1-kg in weight, but it is a lovely camera to play with

Both the FZ-300 & the FZ2000 have identical 'extras' for stills work + movie stuff that does not interest me

Hope this helps ~ and come back with more Qs as they arise

My bad ladies and gents. English is not my first language. Im an import from Sweden and I honestly had no clue a "bridge camera" was a thing, or ILC for that matter....My suggestion would still be a pro full frame camera body, where you can use different lenses.

So just to make myself clear...lol: To me a DSLR was meant as any camera where you can change lenses (sony, canon, nikon, mirrorless etc etc...)

G'day Stefan

There's nothing imperfect about your knowledge or use of the English language ... and we English-only speakers are the poorer for not having multiple language skills

The OP was asking for recommendations regarding a "Bridge" camera - ie: one with SLR-like body but with a fixed zoom lens that behaves like multiple smaller zooms. In dSLR terms it would be like having an APS-c dSLR body with an 18 to 400 lens attached, so that there was no need to swap lenses if that was your level of convenience

It was in this vein that I responded with my thoughts on Panasonic cameras - and maybe you and others found out something of interest too :)

Hope this helps
