Soccer Shooting Class

This time, I was at the sports field with a group of 7 students.
Their task was to isolate a player in an action frame and, if pos-
sible, with either an other player in direct competition or the ball.

G'day NS

Sporting events with fast-moving action following the ball are always difficult - plenty of camera panning and shooting just at the 'right' moment

It is also very difficult to get a 'perfect' photo while also having a complementary background. It would be most interesting to compare all the resulting images side-by-side :)

Hey Phil, :)

Yes, sports are challenging… very much so.
However, I never put myself in competition with the student,
This is something they can do among them selves though.

That's a good teaching technique then. Nice shot here! Good action!

I was not meaning that .... more the side-by-side comparisons that come about later when student's images are printed and spread out on the table for some post-shooting comparisons

We print up to 40 4" x 6" prints of a prac session [ie- 3 or 4 per student] and they are all spread randomly across a large table for group reviewing.  Similar pics can be placed adjacent to one another for visual comparisons to be seen & discussed ... and then we invite students to select one print, not their own, to talk about to the group .... to share their feelings about the photo in their hand and why it appeals to them

Yes Phil, they do that. All nameless pictures are given to me and I mix
them. They decide the first 5 shots — but mine are not in the bunch.

This soccer session rendered very cool moments… they are very good
because they know the sport as I am on the hockey side of life.

This is a great point. I remember seeing a wildlife photography tour when I was in Borneo last month and the guide had brought the photographers to watch the flying squirrels. He said just to watch them that night and then tomorrow night you'll know what to expect.

Cool anecdote!
Now what if a ball was introduced… or a puck! :P
