Tried to capture the art of flying. The original was in color .... but this looks best to my eye.
Any comments are welcome.

Chuck - It's a nice enough hummer image. You picked a really tough subject to start on BIF's (birds in flight) with a hummingbird. Next up maybe a swallow in flight! Of course I am kidding ... swallows in flight may be as tough a bird to photograph in flight as any out there, so save that for a while. Most skilled BIF photogrpahers will suggest honing your skills on slower moving birds, like seagulls, etc.

Even with birds in flight it is important to really "bang" the sharpness on the bird's eye. It makes the entire image and other smaller issues will usually be overlooked if the eye is sharp and has a good "eye glint". You captured the eye glint well, but to my eyes the eye and head are just a tad soft.

Photographing BIF's is not for the faint of heart and takes a good deal of practice and timing. I'm looking forward to seeing your future bif images

Great as a first capture, it looks like it's been enlarged a little though. Is this cropped at 100 percent? As bhowdy mentioned, BIF take practice. It's very rewarding when you get that nice crystal clear BIF shot though :) Keep practicing, I look forward to seeing more.

Thanks guys. It is cropped, so some of the sharpness was lost in that alone. Thanks for the input.

I like this, using sepia makes it look like it was taken with an olde time camera. Which is nice to see.

yeh good job. Looks like it's pretty heavily cropped though, am I right?

I like the color change...sort of wipes out the eye from seeing anything else but the image. I did this once with a hummingbird moth which wasn't quite completely in focus also, but it worked for the image in sepia. Since that shot, which was made in low light, I've practiced a lot and have managed to get quite a few "good" shots of hummers...and swallows for that matter, lol...

Mmm I'd personally like to see it turned into a B&W, that might be sweet.

Won't B&W hide some of the noise from cropping it?

Well it'll make it look like it was suppose to be like that. ;)

When I convert to B&W often I add noise using a 3rd party PS plugin (don't use the standard noise). It's called Silver Efex Pro and it'll imitate different films/film noise. It's pretty cool.

What's B&W mean?

Good first attempt on a very difficult subject, keep practising, sharpness is the key
