I guess since I comment on other people's photos I should post some of my own and let you all tell me what I've done wrong :)

I can't find anything wrong with it. Did you use a star filter?

The bursting effect kind of masks what you're trying to show off. A little diffraction too.

Like the sky colors.

When the last candle has been blown out
and the last glass of champagne has been drunk
All that you are left with are the memories and the images-David Cooke.

I did use a star filter, which created that effect. I didn't intend to use it, but I managed to misplace my UV filter and didn't want to shoot at the beach without something protecting my lens. I agree it would have been nicer without the bursting effect.

Oh...I see what you did wrong...You used a canon!:P LOL! Just kidding! Actually it's a nice image. I personally would have cropped off the dead space at the bottom having the image start from the water. I would have also place the subject slightly more to the right of the image to meet the rule of thirds. Nice colours and concept!
