Nicely controlled exposure and saturation. I think the composition might be improved with a wider crop, not a portrait format.

Agreed.

Although I agree with John on the exposure and saturation remark. I can appreciate the idea of a wider crop to improve composition. This is where I'm going to zig where others are zagging. I rather like the portrait view of this scene. I think if you go wide it will take from the rocks (which are the focal point IMO). Keeping it in portrait also keeps your eyes focused on the suns reflection.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree that without seeing the landscape photo, I imagine I'll like portrait more.

I agree with the portrait mode. Some landscapes crop themselves and I think the sun's reflection and the rocks demand this orientation. Its possible the landscape crop would ALSO work though. The beauty of digital....Well done, I say!....;)

Why so serious?

+1 on portrait for this view. But there's not enough here to hold my interest for very long. I like the colors, although the sun seems blown out to me. Some better clouds or a few more rocks would help.

I definitely think the OP is on the right track.

IMO.

Another vote for portrait, the reflection leads your eye up the photo.
