Dropping sun, Newport Beach and a little luck

6 years 2 months ago #563346 by Alex
Managed to get out Saturday and went down to Newport Beach. Sunset colors were limited, however managed to fire off a couple I was happy with. This shot was taken with Nikon D850, 24-70mm. Settings: ISO 400 | 1/500 sec | f/8.0 | 24mm

BTW... the little luck IMO is the skim boarder that dropped into my frame.  He was there for about 25 minutes, I bumped up my ISO to 400 in this shot in hopes to get some detail out of the water spray.

Image was processed in Lightroom and Photoshop

Pretty short breaking wave there Alex....
Seriously, a neat photo....Well shot! You're probably not sick of that D850 yet, just remember I can solve that issue if it arises......;)

We like the color, composition, and the surfer. I'd suggest cropping in from the left to lose the business end of the pier. Then the pier and beach would frame the surfer nicely. IMO, of course.

Hmmm for me, I think you can shave a little off the top and bottom.  Love the photo though!

See, I prefer that, in that the focal point is the surfer and everything else supports him. The end of the pier competes for attention IMHO and doesn't really add anything in this shot. (Take away the surfer and you have a completely different image, which makes sense with the entire pier.) I'd agree to shaving the bottom a bit. I can't really suggest an aspect ration, but I think it could be tightened up. Perhaps 10% or so taken off? I don't think you should lose any of the top. But again, IMHO.

I like the person standing back by the pier, too. Sort of an easter egg.

But more importantly, Alex, what do you think? (And I haven't forgotten that I owe you a call.... my bad.)

Much better with the pier left side shaved off.  I'm on the fence with shaving off from the bottom.   Cool reflection on the back side of the water spraying.

I much prefer the original framing. But I would go for a faux color or B&W treatment instead of natural color.

I'm with Cook, but if you must crop, I'd go much tighter on the smim boarder, you got the rooster tail water very well....

Great advice guys!  I actually like it cropped.  Now I made a few different crops... which do you like most?

Middle. I prefer the context provided by the sky. It puts the pier and the large wave on the horizontal 1/3 lines.

I took the image into LR and played with the shadows, highlights and split toning. You can do more with this, IMHO.
