Unusual Mary

One of Caravaggio's early commissions, this was destined to hang in a StPeter's chapel. Rumor has it thatCardinal Borghese easily convinced the Vatican censors, who likely were intimately acquainted with Caravaggio's model, that the painting was too risque' for StPeter's. He immediately bought it for himself, and it can be seen in the Borghese Gallery:

What's he stepping on?  Is that another foot or horns?

… the head of a large snake!

Why the amber cast… is it the painting or the WB?

A few clicks got me to this…

My images represent the painting fairly accurately. Most reproductions (in books amd prints) remove the "cast" to "improve" the image, but it is not what the painting looks like today.
And, not just a snake, THE snake...:)
