Mesa Arch take 3

0330 arrival to get my spot and I was still beat by 4 others! It takes some serious dedication to get your spot before anyone else. The biggest problem though comes when it starts to get light though latecomers show up in absloute droves and will squeeze into the smallest gaps in order to shoot the arch. This morning saw 16 photographers on tripods with late arrivals shooting handheld over our shoulders making for about 50 people in total.

Not just the sun but how the light reflected on the rocks. It draws you inside.

It's all worth it. Really good light in here. The sun is warm to the eyes.

Seriously at 3:30am?  What is everyone doing at that time?  If you have to head off to use the rest room, do you leave your gear there?  If so, are the people at least cool to watch your stuff?

That's a good point. But I think that it is all worth the trouble. Awesome capture.

Dead serious. There were already people out there too. I was the 5th person to arrive. There are no toilets near the arch so be prepared. #1 etiquette is don't go near the arch or the trail. #2 should be done at the trailhead at the pit toilet since your hiking along slick rock and any dirt is covered in a cryptobiotic crust that shouldn't be disturbed.

There's a lot of really cool stuff you can do with astrophotography before sunrise. The arm of the Milky Way was rising parallel with the arch that morning, which made for a pretty cool scene. Besides that, we just talked. I broke from the crowd to cook an early breakfast and make some coffee after a bit.

In general, folks are well behaved around the arch. Gym rules apply; don't move people's stuff, don't steal a spot when it's obvious the guy just went to the bathroom. Occasionally an asshole stops by but they're few and far between.
