Aquae Vitae - Panther Creek Falls, WA

5 years 5 days ago #640004 by spudalicious
This is the wonderful and beautiful Panther Creek Falls in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington State.    I had accidentally grabbed my 10 stop ND instead of the intended 2 stop.  Therefore shutter time is not what I would have preferred.    There was no way, I was going to do the straight up climb and the slip-n-slide deathy return back down to grab the correct filter though.

To be honest, just seeing these beautiful falls in person was enough anyway.  Getting a decent photo was always secondary.

This is not a bad shot. I like the exposure here. It is a joy to watch this landscape.

Thanks Sara. It was a joy to be there and soak it all in. Both literally and figuratively. LOL

Indeed, cool take but I have an issue with the saturation
level that doesn't look natural too much!

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Thanks :) I have to admit. I do love my photos with some color pop. After contrast adjustments, this has about a +10 vibrance adjustment. It's not to everybody's taste for sure. However, I should say, that this really isn't that different than reality. Everything in this location is covered with green green green and it was a rainy day in the morning hours, adding a lot of natural color saturation.

Totally valid critique. It's just my artistic choice.

Apart from the saturation, I think this is a really good landscape.

I like the exposure, the composition, and the mist.

I also think your saturation is fine. What you might do is lower the luminance on the greens and yellows a bit, to darken them.

I find this to be a successful image.

Yep agree, it kind of has a dreamy feeling to it.  Very relaxing shot, this would look great on acrylic print.

Looks good to me.

What a great image. If you tweak it just a little this image jumps off the screen and slaps you in the face. The white balance needs a little tweak. The tint is too much on the green side. It could use a little magenta. If you pick a gray spot in the rock of the bottom waterfall near the center with the eye dropper, it starts to come alive. A couple more tweaks in the HSL panel and wowza she stands out. I'm jealous it's not my shot. I can show you how I see the image if you like. If you prefer it the way it is, it's still a nice shot to be proud of.

Beautiful. (period)

Looks like a rainforest to me.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

Absolutely.  I'm always interested in the different ways artist interpret an image.   :)   It really gets creative juices flowing.

Excellent image as usual! I'm loving the amount of mist in the air. It gives the image that dreamy Orton Effect that works so well with scenes like this.

Re: Randy's rendition (say that three times fast...)

I prefer the original. While I like the color interpretation of the edit (especially the deepening of the green) along with the very minor WB tweak, I don't care for the removal of the haze, and the overall sharpness. It, for me, removes the mood, too.

That said, some selective application of detail and dehazing might be interesting, to help direct the eye through the image. But I find that hammer a bit heavy.

So I'll back up and ask, what's the subject of this image?
