CityGull

Maybe should have cropped it a little to get a more vertical image.

Crepuscular Gull that is! :P

Light is free… capturing it is not!

While I'm not a fan of the blue tone, the biggest problem I see is that nothing draws our eye to the (purported) subject. I didn't notice the gull right away, and given the title, I'm pretty sure that's what you wanted to draw the eye to.

I would suggest B&W here, and create significant tonal contrast between the building and the bird. Our eyes are drawn to things in focus, followed by the highest contrast. Lightest/darkest are in there somewhere. None of which applies to this image.

I rather like the angles, but you need to emphasize the natural shape of the bird against the man-made structure (geometrically speaking) I think.

Finally, what are you trying to say? If you have a firm idea of what you want to communicate, does the image you create accomplish that? Only you can answer that question.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the comment!

The gull title is misleading, I wasn't trying to attract attention to the gull. To me it's more like an element to discover as you look closer.

First i took this photo:

I liked the pattern made by the windows.

Then I took another one as the light was really particular, I didn't add much processing to the colour version.

Sent too fast and can't find an "edit button":

I liked the gull hidden on the concrete background.
I'm not too happy with the proportions though.

Stunning picture! The texture on the building is superb! But your vertical shot is best!

The blue tone is indeed flat. Since you want to emphasize the man-made patterns, you need to give it more contrast. And maybe change the caption since the gull is not main subject of the shot.

I'll pay attention to the captions in the future :)

Will see if i can give it more contrast.
Thanks

But this building has indeed really good patterns. Well done for seeing this.

I agree! But the subject has a very good potential. Meanwhile, you are right to improve the contrast and to make the tones richer.
