From Couch's Staircase—Watkins Glen State Park

4 years 10 months ago #646268 by New but trying

A shot I took high up from Couch's Staircase. The first image is one I edited solely in Darktable having been inspired by the historic photographs littered throughout the entrance of the park. The second image is that with a mild filter (slightly colorized and with increased contrast), and the last is the scene lightly edited in color.

The two converted images are desperately dark and not
correctly colour converted… not really pleasurable.

I imported your colour version in my converter and ended
with a very different result. Maybe you should reconsider
your renditions?

I was attempting to capture the "old" look of some the historical photos of the park, but I think I might have overdone it. Hopefully these look a little better:

Make: NIKON CORPORATION
Model: NIKON D3300
ISO: 200
Aperture: f/9.0
Shutter speed: 1/400 sec

These are much more successful, well done!

That's the trap with the old documents: they may have suffered
all kinds of alteration through UV among many others. If one
studies properly preserved historical photograph, their real dyna-
mic range — though old and limited — had a charm of their own!

I also think that the newly edited ones are much better. The first two shots were really dark and lacking in tonal range.

Yeah! I agree that the edited ones are way better. I like the details in the B&W rendition.

Very good render for the shot! Nice range of tones.
