"Good" is relative. If you need a super long lens to get the shot, and don't have a gazillion dollars, the cheap lens you have is better than the expensive lens you don't have. I'm looking at an Opteka site, and the lenses I see are spiffed up versions of cheap lenses that have been for sale since before I was born. There is no doubt these lenses have issues, but I think you get a decent lens for the price they are charging (dirt cheap). It might be worth looking around though. I bet you can find those 500mm f/8 reflex (mirror) lenses on Ebay for about $20. They may have a different brand name, but I bet it's the same lens. They come with a T-mount, so you need a T-mount adapter (maybe $20?).

I heard a story once about one of the cheap lenses bought out of the back of photography mags. It was a 600mm f/? i think. The guy claimed it sucked with the lens hood it came with, but when he attached a much longer DIY lens hood it was a much better performer.

They are all slow. These would only be good in bright light.

Also the bokeh with those lenses is cop bokeh, or doughnut shaped.

Yeah, the Mirror lenses will have "doughnut: shaped OOF highlights. As for the long pre-set lens or the fisheye's, they won't. The pre-set lenses are a cheap option of getting into the super tele range, but you have to focus wide open & then stop down to your shooting aperture, that is if your camera will meter with either those or the mirror lenses. Base models Nikons won't...Doesn't mean you can't use them, cause you can, they just require an external meter or "Sunny 16" & LCD/Histogram for the exposure....Not good for fast moving subjects or rapidly changing lighting situations...
