What Lenses Auto Focus

13 years 6 months ago #2749 by motorcross
I bought a Tamron 200-500 f5.6-6.3 the auto focus would not ever lock. So I returned the lens and faulty and got another one, but the second one did the same thing. When I went to return the lens for the second time there was a new salesman and he said that nikon and canon told him that lenses that are higher than f5.6 will auto focus. Is this the right information?

I do not think this is the correct information because not all lenses have integrated auto focus.

What the rep was saying is that the AF detection system will hunt for focus with lenses that are F5.6 or slower. You may onlyget focus under extremely bright conditions, but that would limit it's usability....That is an inherent limitation with slow lenses (that & dim viewfinders as well)

Screamin Scott is exactly right, when you get over f5.6, it has to be pretty bright out to get auto focus. But with a 500mm lens you should be manual focusing anyway. At that distance the camera is having a heck of a time to figure out what your metering on. In addition to that, you should be using a tripod (or some sort of stabilization) and it helps if you keep your shutter speed at least 500/sec or higher.
