What is yellow filter for?

I was just on B&H and noticed some filters that were yellow.  What are these for?

I don't know of any practical use a yellow filter has with a digital camera.  But, with B&W film, a yellow filter tends to add significant contrast to the capture.  It is particularly effective when shooting clouds in a blue sky. 
There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

And a polarized filter will pretty much do that too right?  Referring to the clouds.

Yes, but a polarizer workers differently, needs in-field adjustments and significantly reduces total light hitting the sensor/film/media. For film, a red filter even increases contrast more than a yellow filter.  

I wonder what would happen using colored filters on a digital camera set to capture in B&W?

It can.  Polarizers filter polarized light.  So if the sun is at the correct angle for the light to be polarized, the filter will darken the sky.  The yellow filter (or orange or red) filters out light at the blue end of the spectrum and darkens the sky as long as it is blue, regardless of the angle of the sun.  Of course it works only in black and white.  In a color image these filters will simply turn the image an overall yellow or orange or red.

A polarizer is likely a useful filter for your digital camera.  The yellow filter would be a waste of money since you can apply its effect to black and white images in the post process by simply dialing down the blue..
