What do colored lens filters do?

Speaking of filters, I noticed there are all different colored filters out there.  What do these do?

Example: red filter,  green and yellow

The mentioned colour filters are/were mainly used in
B&W photography in the days. Not really necessary
today as proper converters will translate to B&W any
recording — even emulating colour filters as well.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

So most  won't use these then?  Can't you convert your photo to B&W in Photoshop  or Nik Software?

Um, yes?

PS can host plugins like Nik, but they're not required. LR, etc, allow the manipulation of color/etc. Lots of power, lots of choices, lots of education out there.

As well as B&W contrast modifiers, some were also to correct colt temperature. Ie: incadescent film shot under fluorescent lights

G'day Fran

Back in the days of film & 'black & white' negs / prints, the regime was "a coloured filter will lighten its own colour, and darken its opposite colour" when one considers the regular colour-wheel. Thus serious 'togs would have 3 or 4 coloured filters in the bag and use them as appropriate

On the internet today, there are still ads trying to sell coloured filters to us digital users - and if you use one, you simply end up with a red-blue-yellow-whatever coloured image

As others ^^ have noted, you can take an everyday digital image and in PP you can convert it to B&W and use the sliders to accentuate the tones to emulate the old days of film

Hope this helps

Of course.  You can even apply the effects of the filters to the image in the software.  In fact most image editing software (including photoshop)  Allow you to filter the three primary colors individually on a sliding scale.  We can do much more with b&w images today in image processing software than we ever could in the film days.
