Best Lens For Flower Photography?

3 years 7 months ago #692253 by Visana
Hi, so lately I've really started to dig flower photography. It's beautiful, fun, and subjects are plentiful. I've tried shooting with all three of my lenses and have noticed that they all produce different results. Differences in sharpness, color, bokeh, DOF, the works. So, that makes me wonder... if different lenses yield different results in the same field, then there must be a lens that transcends them all. The obvious guess is that such a lens would be a macro lens...

but what do you guys think? From your opinion, to your experience, what's the best flower photography lens?

A macro lens comes first to mind for sure but there are
other options.

Among the features of any lens, there is the "minimum
focus distance which will consider objects at closer ran-
ge — like the paradise flower in 4.

Another important feature is the focal length. The longer
focal length will allow a greater distance so you don't ob-
struct any light coming in.

All pictures were taken with a 105 mm ƒ 2,8 macro except
#4 that was shot with a 200 mm ƒ2 lens

Light is free… capturing it is not!

You don't specify your camera, nor which lenses you have / tried. Nor do you define "best".

Depth of field and blur are dependent upon the focal length, distance to subject, and distance to background. None of which you mention. Sharpness: lens image quality, as well as tripod (?). Color: are you shooting RAW files, or JPGs?

You need a good lens, and yes, longer is better for macro work. You might want a tripod. Then there's light. And finally: post-processing. Which you don't mention.

Lots of unknowns here. I am hoping that you begin to understand that the answer to your question is some combination of "it depends" and "it's complicated."
