Are Infrared Filters worth the money?

I have seen some very impressive infrared photos and would like to play around with taking some photos. I was looking on B&H and they sell some Lee Filters 3x3" Infrared (87C) Polyester Filters for $13.95. Are these going to give me the good results that you see in many of the photos here?

There are really mixed results and views on them from what I read. I dont know about those Lees but generally cheaper doesnt do well and also you might google Infrared photography filters and your camera model. I know that some cameras play better with them and others do not.

Thanks for the input guys. Scott would you happen to have any photos you can post to show? I'm curious how these look straight from the camera with no post processing. Thanks again!

I don't have any without any PP done, but here is a link to a set on Flickr of my IR shots....Note that the color ones are from years ago when I was shooting Ecktachome IR film

With no PP, they can be red hued or if you notice the ones on the set have a cutom WB done using grass

Very nice work Scott. I really like the motion shown in the car photo. I was wondering, in a few of them there was some noise shown in the photo. Now is that because you were shooting in a high ISO or is that a byproduct of shooting with these type of filters?

They were all shot @ ISO 200 as far as I can recall.....They were taken with a Nikon D70s & the camera's metering set the shutter speed (I was in aperture priority). Likely due to slight underexposure. Bracketing would have helped. The D70s is nice for IR as it passes more IR than newer models do due to it's anti-aliasing (sp?) filter...I just set up the camera on a tripod, set the composition, screw in the filter, set the aperture I want to use & press the shutter. I havebeen able to hand hold the camera as well (just can't compose the scene)...BTW, I'm on my day job, so I can only check the website on my lunch & breaks...
