Gary Fong Puffer review

11 years 10 months ago #234393 by Foxy Girl
I'm sorry but after using this on my D80 for a couple months now, I'm convinced this wasn't a good buy. The range of my pop up flash is dramatically cut in half with this thing on. I bought because I don't like to carry around my big flash all the time and needed a way to evenly soften up my pop up flash. I also notice the color tone of the light changes, which of course changes the color balance.

Lucky this wasn't that much on the purse, but still bad investment.

I have one and agree that it has problems. The only way I'll get any use out of mine is in manual flash mode as an on-axis fill...that's about it.

It is what it is.

These diffuser things just scatter the light a little more... which makes it less effective.

The Gary Fong... I don't know the name.... looks like tupperware... well anyway, that thing just scatters light all over the place. Which = wasted light.

Better to bounce your flash off something.

So is there any way to effectively soften your on camera flash with out taking away from it's range?

Like any diffuser, you are going to lose some range. The amount depends on the diffusing material and reflection. Her'e a DIY that you could modify to meet your needs.

I almost bought one of those things but heard that there was to much light lost because of how thick the plastic is.

I've seen such mixed reviews on this thing, I wasn't sold on it. Gary Fong does have a good light sphere that works good if you can keep it on your flash head.

I wouldn't have spent money on that, I've heard to many mixed reviews and people who bought this and just don't use.

The Puffer would get better results if the plastic wasn't so thick and it had a larger diffused area

:agree: the light needs to have more direction to it, but also needs a thinner plastic used to allow more light to pass.

I had one of these and never used it. I always had my off flash to use.
