Need Advice on my mini studio - Lighting

5 years 8 months ago #595873 by kavehh
Hello everyone,
This is my first post  and I am so excited to be part of this community.

I am aiming to get good macro shots for my food photography.  I have a small room which can be completely dark.

I feel like the lighting stand I have is not suited for this job. It's not broadcasting lights  like the sample I see online.    I don't want to spend more money buying new lighting equipment. I believe I an turn it into something more suitable for food photography. perhaps make the lighting more focused by covering part of the light softener?  or is it the softener itself that is ruining it?

I really appreciate some expert advice on my little photo studio.  I undrestand about light reflections but It seems light the light is not focused enough to be reflected back to the object.

Thank you so much for all the help. I hope I can contribute to this forum in future.

Your very first asset is knowledge and not gear.

For exemple, good understanding of the inverse square law
is you best tool I think. I have students that work successfully
with only a 60w table light source in similar setup.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Thank you for your message. Totally agree. I've learned something new. I'm not going to invest in any gear. Just wanted some guide to how I can enhance the lighting so I can get better pictures.

This is painfully obvious, so my apology in advance if you already know this -

The photo shows the softbox to be aimed level, perfectly squared away on the stand. Every light has a pivot to allow the vertical angle to be adjusted. Try adjusting the light so that it is aimed downward, toward the subject, instead of level.
