How bright of a flash do i need?

I've seen some of you with images taken outdoors with your model lite perfectly and the background a little dark, and it's out in the day light.  

How powerful of a flash is needed for that? 

I hope that makes sense.  Than you for your help.

I mostly use from 125 to 500w heads depending on the task.
I stopped using speed lights when I realised I often needed
two + units from the same point.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Yes, the 125 and 250 are but not the 500.

There are battery packs available, too, such as the Vagabond from Paul C Buff.
