Are all flashes the same?

Nikon, Canon, Pentax brand flashes are they all the same? Same quality, same distance the light will travel, same kind of usage?

No. Different brands have different mounting schemes in the hot shoe, for one. There are flashes that just give a burst of light. There are flashes which adjust the strength and length of the light burst. There are flashes that accept adjustments from the camera. There are flashes which feed back very high voltage to the hot shoe and can damage some cameras.

There are TTL, dTTL, iTTL, eTTL and some other specifications to take into account, also.

Read the camera specifications carefully and then read the flash specifications carefully. Match the flash to the camera. I use some Vivitar flashes on my Nikons, as well as some of Nikon brand, but I know that brand and read the specs before buying.

Nope.

Even taking into account that each manufacturer sells different flashes of different performance and quality, at the moment Nikon has the edge over the competition with its CLS system that allows multi-off-camera flash to be fully integrated with the camera's iTTL metering system.
Canon isn't that far behind, but Nikon have been leading the way for the past two evolutions of flash equipment so far this past decade and there's no indication that Canon are catching up.

Nikon's flagship Speedlight is the SB900 and it's pretty bombproof - just don't use it with rechargeable batteries - it sucks a lot of power and using rechargeables (which have a hotter operating temperature anyway) which are only 1.2v (as opposed to disposables with 1.5v) can make you flashgun overheat as the batteries are worked harder.
