Portrait Lighting kit for beginner

13 years 6 months ago #3800 by Lindsey
I currently have a Canon Rebel and shopping around for a new tripod as we speak. I would like to get into doing portraits and would like to get a lighting kit. After $200 budget for the tripod I have $600 left over for lighting. What do you recommend for a beginner?

Thank you

There are a ton of lighting kits available. Flashpoint makes some very affordable monolights for under your budget.

Hi,

Before taking the plunge and buying some lights you might see if you can try some different ones first.

Are you close to a large city? Check for Photography Meetups. SMUGMUG has several. At ours one time this summer a Camera store brought in a bunch of lights, gave a talk on using and you could try them out.

Secondly you might rent some ones to get idea what you like and need. The big decision is the which mount to use. Sofboxes beauty dishes reflecter etc all mount using the mounting sytem. Lights are expensive enough but in time you end up investing a lot in modifiers to.

Are you going to be indoors only? Or do you want to shoot outdoors also. This will determine how powerfull (in watt seconds) you need.

FInally even igf you get more than one light start shooting with one and learn one light before adding another. You would be amazed at what you can do with one light and a reflector.

Doug
