How to get really close macro pictures?

I know one needs a macro lens to shoot 1:1 macro pictures. But I have seen really close up pictures of insects eyes etc... How does one get that close? Can a macro lens really do that? I see there are different focal lengths of macro lenses like 85mm, 105mm. etc.. Does the focal length have anything to do with it?

I think what you are talking about requires extension tubes between the camera and macro lens.

I've gone ahead and moved this thread into the macro forum. You might want to do some reading on the subject there while you are waiting for replies. See... www.photographytalk.com/forum/macro-photography

There are several ways to achieve macro including a macro lens. A reversing adapter can get you pretty close. Extension rings are another way to go. It's not as easy as it looks as focus becomes very critical and DOF is razor thin at that magnification. The rewards are amazing though as you well know.

Be sure to post some images as you explore this fascinating area of photography. :goodpost:

Hi Tylor,
It depends on which system you're using, but as a general rule, all "True Macro Lenses" only go to 1:1. The exception is the Canon MPE 65mm which reaches 5X. For other systems, as pointed out already, you can use extension tubes, teleconverters, reversed lens or even bellows to increase magnification. For some examples, you can check my equipment gallery here .

Hope this helps.

Dang can you please repost that link? It now goes to the gallery page, I'm guessing another bug due to site update.
