Found this Longhorned Wood Borer Beetle on my patio the other night. Note how the antennae come out of it's eyes...

How is your flash set up when you are shooting insects?  I've tried photographing bugs in the past and realized quickly the heads up flash isn't the best option.

I use an older ring/point light from film days. Not the best when shooting highly reflective subjects though. Then it is an off camera speedlight on a bracket with a 6x8 diffuser attached.

What do you think of Sigma's ring flash?

I'm not familiar with it but it seems to get pretty good reviews. The units I use (I have several) are branded Lester A Dine & were made by Sunpak back in the mid 1980's. I use them in manual mode along with the camera in manual mode as well. I have found that keeping the shutter at the 1/250th sync speed & the aperture around F16 with ISO at 200, I get pretty consistent results. Oh, the flash has power levels & I normally set it at 1.4th power. You can control the exposure by adjusting the aperture, ISO or power level of the ring light. By doing so, you can completely black out a distracting background or allow some ambient light in the frame. You cab see examples of what I mean in my Flickr photostream under albums & choose any of the insect albums.
