Lava Leaf is from my Naturally Abstract collection and was composed at Hopeland Gardens in Aiken, SC.  For me, it is a prime example of how powerful golden hour backlighting can be.  That gorgeous sunlight transformed a dying leaf into fantastic colors that immediately made me think of lava flows.  Discovering scenes like this keeps me going and reaffirms my love of macro and abstract macro photography.

First, thank you.  I can't tell you what kind of leaf it is.  I do know that they love the swampy area and grow to be a foot or more in length.  I suspect that most of the color comes from the golden hour backlighting.  The sun was lighting it up and infusing those tones throughout the entire area.  Without that, it was a rather dead looking, kind of ugly, almost brown color.
