Some other finds today

After finding the Red Spotted Purple Caterpillars this morning, I found a Clouded Sulphur Caterpillar this afternoon ( I think it's about ready to pupate) and what I assume was a just eclosed Snowberry Clearwing Moth.

Is it easy to find these things or do you have to hunt for them? I've read that you are in the Atlanta metro area, which sounds suburban (at least). How far do you have to go get your bugs?

I’m at the edge of the metro area. My subdivision adjoins some pastures as well as wooded areas. I find most all of my subjects on that road or my backyard. I don’t go looking for them but spot them when walking my dog.

A few pointers, 1) most caterpillars are found on the undersides of leaves during the day. 2) look for evidence of leaves having been eaten. 3) Know what caterpillar host plants are and look for the above on those plants/trees. If you intend on rearing them you need proper enclosures, the caterpillar's enclosures need to be cleaned frequently and fresh leaves supplied frequently as well. I have a number of caterpillars that are in the pupal stage (Chrysalisis for butterflies and cocoons/ pupal cases for moths. Many moths will pupate either in leaf litter or under loose soil. When moths eclose (become adults and emerge from their pupas) it's usually during the day and most moths fly at night. Thus getting images of them will be easy as they won't fly away like a butterfly might. Whichever, they both need someplace they can hang so as to unfold and dry out their wings...
